At one time, what is now called Cherryland was part of the extensive orchards owned by William Meek. As the need for housing grew, particularly following World War II, the land was gradually sold for residential lots and the region became urbanized. Today Cherryland is a residential neighborhood. Children living in the area attend Hayward schools, which includes Cherryland Elementary School.
There are two public parks in Cherryland. Meek Park is home to the historic Meek Mansion and is a multi-use park featuring, in addition to the mansion, a group picnic area, play area, and open lawn area. Cherryland Park is another popular neighborhood park. Operated by the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, Cherryland Park has a playground, picnic tables, barbecues, open lawns, basketball and horseshoe courts, and a skateboard area.
