With over 3200 acres devoted to industrial and business parks, and access to transportation via rail and sea, Hayward is a center for manufacturing, as well as sales and distribution operations.  Hayward is also home to the Hayward campus of California Sate University East Bay, which, in 2009, was rated by the Princeton Review as a “Best in the West” college for the sixth consecutive year.

The 1940s were booming times in Hayward.  As the economy grew, so did the population and the need for affordable housing.  Many of the early tract homes built in Hayward were built by David Bohannon and Oliver Rousseau, who also built many mid-century homes in San Francisco’s Sunset District.
