Although there is a small amount of light and high-tech industry in Hercules, it is primarily a residential city.  The first subdivisions were built in 1975 and subsequent growth has been thoughtful.  The waterfront area is an example of a design principal called New Urbanism, which offers modern living with a wide range of housing choices and urban convenience.  Homes are varied in style and built with traditional architecture in mind; garages are out of sight, and vertical mixed-use units combine office space below and living quarters upstairs.  The neighborhood is pedestrian friendly with shops, restaurants, businesses, and public transportation within walking distance.
