Located between San Leandro and Hayward, San Lorenzo is perfectly situated for commuting to other East Bay locations via I-880, which intersects San Lorenzo. Access to the Peninsula is also convenient, as the San Mateo Bridge crosses the San Francisco Bay only a few miles south of San Lorenzo.

The 1940s brought rapid growth to the East Bay, and housing was in great demand throughout the area.  Almost all of the businesses and homes in San Lorenzo were built during this period, including one of the first planned communities in the United States, San Lorenzo Village.  Planned and built by David Bohannon, San Lorenzo Village served as a model for future tract developments throughout the country, and included 3000 homes as well as schools, churches, and commercial buildings.

San Lorenzo was virtually built out by the late 1950s and homes there, particularly in San Lorenzo Village, are typical examples of the mid-century tract housing style; they are small, modest, and conventional in design and material.  The area is, however, a significant example of the East Bay Area’s mid-century suburban growth.

San Lorenzo Homes

Homes in San Lorenzo, including those in San Lorenzo Village and Lorenzo Manor, are mostly mid-century ranch style tract homes with two or three bedrooms.  Homes that are more contemporary can be found in newer developments including Ravenwood Townhomes and Cottage Square.
